August Chapter Meeting - Wed 8/24/2016 @ 5:30pm

Wednesday, August 24, 2016 -
5:30pm to 7:00pm
Speaker: Tom Wessel
Topic: Agile Requirements Techniques: Delivering Value Sooner
The Standish Group reports that 45% of all software features are rarely if ever used. This number highlights the waste associated with traditional requirements elaboration approaches and emphasizes that not all requirements are equal.
The goal of this session is to provide you a high level understanding of Agile requirements and how to apply them to your work environment. It will explore why using an iterative and incremental “just-in-time” approach to requirements elaboration is more cost effective and more risk adverse than traditional approaches. Furthermore, it will delve into techniques to effectively capture, prioritize, elaborate and decompose requirements in order to provide the greatest value to your customer sooner.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand why Stories are used for requirements in Agile.
  • Get exposed to the concept of a Minimal Viable Product and why it accelerates value delivery and learning.
  • Learn what the different types of Stories there are in order to capture different user needs.
  • Appreciate the discipline needed to effectively refine Stories based on their priority.
  • Learn how to capture nonfunctional requirements via Stories.
  • Understand how to decompose Stories into finer grain work items.
  • Learn how to slice stories vertically through the software architectural layers to provide increments of value.
