- Felicia Joyner, President IIBA RTP Chapter

As the President of the IIBA RTP Chapter, I want to share with you the invaluable benefits of volunteering with us, based on my personal experiences in various roles. By engaging in leadership roles such as secretary, treasurer, and president, I've gained and honed essential skills that are crucial in our field, though they may not be explicitly outlined in the BABOK Guide.

Here’s what you stand to gain by volunteering:

1. Enhanced Leadership Skills: While the BABOK Guide doesn't single out leadership as a standalone topic, in practice, leadership permeates every aspect of business analysis. By taking on a volunteer role, you'll develop core leadership qualities such as effective communication, collaboration, and decision-making. These skills will empower you to perform business analysis tasks better and drive successful outcomes.

2. Opportunity for Self-Leadership and Personal Growth: Volunteering provides a unique platform for individual contributors to practice self-leadership. You'll learn to manage your tasks, time, and responsibilities more effectively, which is essential for personal and professional growth.

3. Building Confidence and Inspiring Others: As you grow in your volunteer role, you'll build confidence in yourself and inspire confidence in others. This ability to inspire and lead by example is critical, as a true leader is recognized when team members willingly follow, peers view them as capable and reliable, and senior leaders see their potential for greater achievements.

4. Networking and Collaboration: Participating in the IIBA RTP Chapter activities allows you to network with peers and industry leaders who can provide real-world insights. This network can be a tremendous resource for both personal and career development.

5. Recognition as a Leader Among Leaders: As you progress and take on more responsibilities, you demonstrate your capability to lead at the individual level and also among other leaders. This recognition is vital for advancing, showcasing your ability to handle complex leadership challenges.

Volunteering with the IIBA RTP Chapter is not just about giving your time; it’s about growing, learning, and advancing your career. You will gain experiences that go beyond the traditional scope of business analysis and into the realm of real-world leadership and management. We welcome you to join us in this journey of continuous improvement and professional development.
